Volker and Susanne Ledermann had a dream: to preserve a piece of original Africa. In 1993 they fulfilled this on the back then agricultural farm Etusis. The Etusis Nature and Game Reserve was gradually expanded to its 21,000 hectares today. Located halfway between Windhoek and Swakopmund, nestled in mountainous wildlife sanctuary. Etusis is, very much, a guest farm ambience, with easy, relaxed hosting and family-styled dining, where travellers can swap stories and become friends!

Etusis is a consciously unfenced wildlife reserve, to avoid potentially supressing the natural migration of the wildlife: zebras, antelopes, leopards and many other animals have complete freedom to roam on Etusis. Etusis Lodge was built a right in the heart of the reserve, based on an ecologically sustainable tourism concept, in which we understand that we are guests. The lodge has created jobs for the local community and, we try to impart the importance of our natural surroundings and the need to preserve it with all the guests at Etusis.

Guests can experience unforgettable moments on horseback, on a Basotho horse, a scenic drive on the extensive nature reserve or a hike in the surrounding mountains. As the day draws to a close, enjoy a sundowner and savour the magnificent moment when the sun sets behind the Otjipatera Mountain and sharply etches the mountains silhouette while Jupiter rises above. Relax by the pool in the small green oasis in the middle of the semi-desert. There are different accommodation options available, from the self-catering campsite to the private stone and thatch bungalow. Etusis – in English “the place where you can dive deep” is named after the deep lake by the waterfall. This permanent water, in this arid environment is unique and, in itself, worth the trip to Etusis!

Three things make the visit to Etusis unique:

  • Home to the Etusis marble mountains, the Otjipatera mountain range and the Etusis waterfall.
  • The opportunity to experience nature in open Safari vehicles, on horseback or on hikes.
  • A lodge and a guest farm rolled into one

Kashana, on the banks of the ephemeral Omaruru River, is built in and around one of the town’s historic buildings. The main building was originally constructed in 1907 as a casino for local mineworkers. It is thought that the house probably gained its name from the surrounding bush savannah which resembled a wide open plain or ‘Kashana’ in the Owambo language.

The years took their toll on the building and after pains-taking restoration it has been returned to its former glory. It re-opened in 2007 and reflects its German history.

Today, the building is the centrepiece of a lodge-style guesthouse with an attractive bar and a popular all-day à la carte restaurant which is frequented by Kashana’s guests, passing travellers as well the local townspeople.

The courtyard is surrounded by massive old trees which give the garden terrace restaurant charm and ambience.
